Luke 10:25–37 CSB
25 Then an expert in the law stood up to test him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the law?” he asked him. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,” and “your neighbor as yourself.” 28 “You’ve answered correctly,” he told him. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus took up the question and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him up, and fled, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down that road. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 In the same way, a Levite, when he arrived at the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion. 34 He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him. When I come back I’ll reimburse you for whatever extra you spend.’ 36 “Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” 37 “The one who showed mercy to him,” he said. Then Jesus told him, “Go and do the same.”

“ Don’t pick and choose who you will help “

Subtitle: “ No evidence of just leaving church “

This Priest and this Levite
Had a choice to help this man
that was beaten and half dead
But choose not to
And most church folks
Are just like this Priest & Levite
They pick and choose
Who they will help
But then on the other hand
This Priest & Levite has just left the Temple
And now comes across this
Beaten & half dead man
And shows NO EVIDENCE of just leaving the Temple
And today
This Priest & Levite
Is still in the church
Because church folks
Are leaving the church every Sunday
With no evidence of having been to church
Question : Do you PICK & CHOOSE who you will help
Note: The scripture says love you neighbor
Note: The Word of God has to be the FINAL AUTHORITY in your life
Note: Your neighbor — a person who lives ( or is located ) near another
Verse 27 Love ( agapao ) — to have a great affection or care for or loyalty towards.
Different types of love
Agape The God type of love
Eros ( exotic ) this type of love is what a man supposed to have for a woman and a woman for man
Phileo — brotherly love, people that we deal with, like our friends
Storge — family kind of love
Question : Do you PICK & CHOOSE who you will help and if you do how do you pick or what do you go by???????
[ We pick & choose based on ]
1st Who they are / whether you know them or not
2nd If you like them or not
3rd If they can pay you back if it’s money or can they do for you as well
4th If it’s going to make you look good / The Spot light
5th If you have the mindset that when you do for someone that God will automatically reward you for that / you’re doing only because you’re hoping for a return and not from the heart
6th Because they know it’s going to be something in it for them DOWN THE ROAD
7th Because they want to hold something over your head
8th Because some people have the mindset that [ I got mine you get yours ]
9th Because they see some people less or beneath them
Our help towards people
Should be based on
Our Love for God
And God along
Statement : If our vertical relationship with God is DAMAGE or BROKEN we can never LOVE nor HELP properly which is our Horizontal relationship with others
Explain: The Text
Luke 10:25 CSB
25 Then an expert in the law stood up to test him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Note: This lawyer wants to test Jesus
The question in this case was not sincere, as can be seen from two points in the text:
(1) The lawyer wanted to test Jesus. (He called Jesus “Teacher,” didaskale, Luke’s equivalent of a Jewish Rabbi.)
(2) After Jesus answered the man’s question, Luke recorded that the man wished to justify himself (Luke 10:29).
Jesus answered his question with two other questions (v. 26),
driving the Law expert back to the Old Testament Law.
The expert answered correctly by quoting from Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18.
One must love … God and one’s fellowman in order to keep the Law properly.
Jesus affirmed that if the man did this, he would live.
The man’s response should have been to ask,
“How can I do this?
“ I am not able.
“I need help.”
Instead, he tried “to justify himself,” that is, to defend himself against the implications of Jesus’ words.
So he tried to move the focus off himself by asking, And who is my neighbor?
Quote: Tony Evans says we try to see how far we can go without sinning not realizing the whole time we have been sinning instead of just trying to be better christians “
Note: The Lawyer wanted to DO SOMETHING to inherit eternal life.
Note: Is the lawyer asking only about “getting saved” or is he asking a broader question about pleasing God and receiving all that God has to offer him?
Luke 10:26 CSB
26 “What is written in the law?” he asked him. “How do you read it?”
There is a note of irony in this reversal: he will expound what stands written (γέγραπται, gegraptai) by God, because Jesus has asked him for scriptural support.
Luke 10:26 Jesus responds with a question
about the law (νόμος, nomos),
which is the expression
of God’s revealed will
for that time
By responding this way,
Jesus identifies himself
not as a radical/root
who wishes to deny
the teaching of Jewish tradition
but as one
who wishes to reflect on what God requires
Quote: But let it never be forgotten that what the law demands of us, the gospel produces in us.
Luke 10:27 CSB
27 He answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,” and “your neighbor as yourself.”
The heart (emotions),
The soul (consciousness),
strength (motivation).
The Synoptic Gospels all have “heart” and “soul,”
Matthew omits strength, and all add mind” (intelligence).
Luke 10:27 (BECNT Lk 9:51-24:53):
The lawyer answers the question
about receiving life
in the future
in concrete terms
of love and devotion,
not in an abstract sense.
Both God and humans
are to receive love.
Such love is not marked by
the presence of great feeling
but is objectively manifested in considerate responsiveness.
The depth of one’s devotion
is emphatically underlined
by the repeated reference
to the various parts
of the person
that contribute energy to this love.
Heart, soul, strength, and mind—
the whole person—
contribute to this response.
Mark and Luke
are distinct in having
four terms where Deut. 6:5 and Matthew have three.
In addition,
devotion to God
is expressed by devotion to others,
so that there is no distinction
between devotion to God
and treatment of people.
They go together.
Jesus encourages total love for God and humankind.
Luke 10:28 CSB
28 “You’ve answered correctly,” he told him. “Do this and you will live.”
10:28 do this and you will live. Cf. Leviticus 18:5; Ezekiel 20:11.
“Do and live”
is the promise of the law.
But since no sinner
can obey perfectly,
the impossible demands
of the law
are meant to drive us
to seek divine mercy (Gal. 3:10–13, 22–25).
This man
should have responded
with a confession
of his own guilt,
rather than self-justification (v. 29).
Luke 10:29 CSB
29 But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
10:29 wanting to justify himself.
This reveals
the man’s self-righteous character.
who is my neighbor?
The prevailing opinion
among scribes and Pharisees
was that one’s neighbors
were the righteous alone.
According to them,
the wicked—
including rank sinners
(such as tax collectors and prostitutes),
Gentiles, and especially Samaritans—
were to be hated
because they were the enemies of God.
